“A nation that destroys its soils destroys itself. Forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh strength to our people.”

– Franklin D. Roosevelt

It is our responsibility, as human beings, to create a future where both people and nature can thrive and achieve a sustainable existence on Earth. As humans, we have quickly made this planet our own with our booming population and our increasing demand on planet Earth’s precious resources. To meet these demands, we have altered the planet’s natural balance — so much so that we are now responsible for nature’s survival.

Our species has cleared over 3 trillion trees and cultivated half of the Earth’s fertile land and fish in most of the ocean. As a result, the population of wild animals has reduced by 60% in just the last 50 years. We have replaced “the wild” with ourselves and our domesticated animals and plants, and this biodiversity loss is one of the world’s biggest issues.

Without this biodiversity, our planet simply doesn’t work. It needs its wild spaces, and only if this balance is restored, can the planet run efficiently and smoothly. Without the wild, the planet can’t cater for our species’ needs, maintain the weather and help absorb our impact. Biodiversity equals balance and stability within our planet, and it is the only way we will all thrive.

We are taught from a young age just how important trees are to the planet and human life as we know it. They create the air that we breathe, filtering out pollution and creating habitats for thousands of different species all over the world. Trees can also play a huge role in preventing natural disasters like floods, as they intercept water through their sophisticated system of roots. It is said that a mature evergreen tree can take in more than 15,000 litres of water every year. By absorbing heavy rainwater, trees act as a natural defence mechanism against the elements and give the soil a fighting chance during harsh periods of weather.

Increasing levels of carbon dioxide caused by deforestation and fossil-fuel combustion trap heat in the atmosphere. Trees reduce the effects of climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide (CO2) created by human activity, which would otherwise enter our already vulnerable atmosphere. In urban environments, trees absorb other pollutant gases like nitrogen oxides, ozone and carbon monoxide, and they sweep up particles like dust and smoke.

It is believed that a mature canopy tree can absorb enough carbon and release enough oxygen to sustain two human beings! Despite the importance of trees to our existence, we cut down vast amounts of forest worldwide for many different reasons, including building materials, fuel and paper. When trees are cut down, it releases the CO2 from within, and this accounts for over 25% of the overall CO2 created by humans.

“Reversing deforestation is complicated; planting a tree is simple” – Martin O’Malley

There is no better feeling than exploring the great outdoors. The feeling of clean, fresh air and a deep connection with nature promotes a calming sensation that can reduce stress and anxiety.

As we humans have made this world our own, it is now up to us to restore the natural balance the Earth desperately needs. No individual or select group of people can fix this problem alone, it is up to all of us to do our bit and save our planet. Whether as a business or as an individual, there are always beneficial practices we can follow to help mother nature.

We are committed to continually working towards operating in the most efficient and sustainable way we possibly can and giving back wherever we can. This is why we are proud partners of ONETREEPLANTED.
