How CBD can help with back pain

It is estimated that 28 million adults in the UK are living with chronic pain and research has shown that CBD is an effective method of pain relief to combat it. Back pain is among some of the most debilitating chronic pains that people are forced to live with every day with no prospect of recovery.

That’s because while back pain is exceedingly common, it is equally challenging to diagnose. We believe that’s why we’re seeing a growing number of people turning to CBD for back pain.

Back pain is also a personal experience for everyone. What may be mild back pain to one person can feel severe and overwhelming to another. That means the same condition can require completely different kinds and levels of treatment for different people, making it harder for doctors to treat with modern medicines.

This is another reason it’s becoming more common for people to turn to CBD for their back pain.

The specific source of back pain can also be challenging to identify, and there are many potential underlying causes of back pain:

  • Problems may occur within anatomical structures, such as spinal nerve roots, lower back muscles, vertebral bones and joints, intervertebral discs, and/or organs in the abdominal cavity.
  • In other cases, your nerves may send abnormal pain signals to your brain, resulting in neuropathic back pain.
  • Back pain may also be influenced by psychosocial factors, such as stress, depression, and/or anxiety.

However, these are all conditions research has shown that CBD could help with.

How can CBD help with back pain?

Research indicates that CBD oil may reduce back pain by reducing inflammation, tackling anxiety associated with chronic pain and helping users get a better night’s sleep. Let’s take a look at each of these in turn:

CBD could reduce inflammation associated with back pain

CBD has been shown in several studies, like this one from 2015 in the journal of Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry, to offer relief from pain and inflammation, which is often a major factor in chronic back pain.

A 2016 study published in the European Journal of Pain examined the efficiency of transdermal CBD for pain and inflammation in animals. Researchers found that CBD helped reduce swelling as well as other signs of inflammation.

The study concluded that CBD provides potential therapeutic relief when aiming to treat arthritis pain, as well as inflammation caused by hormonal, without any apparent side effects.

CBD could also help with low bone density – a cause of osteoporosis. The most common cause of osteoporosis pain is a spinal compression fracture. It can cause sudden, severe back pain that gets worse when you are standing or walking and trouble twisting or bending your body. Some research has found that CBD interacts with a cannabinoid receptor that may play a role in bone density loss. CBD may therefore be able to reduce the rate of bone density loss that can also be a common cause of back pain in older people.

The Arthritis Foundation also notes some anecdotal evidence that shows some people who use CBD for arthritis saw improved pain levels.

CBD can combat the anxiety associated with chronic back pain

Managing chronic pain daily can take its toll. Anxiety, stress, and depression are all commonly associated with people who have been dealing with long-term chronic pain. Thankfully, there have been loads of studies which identify the potential impact of CBD on mood, including its built-in anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects.

In fact, a study published in 2018 in the Journal of Affective Disorders found that cannabis significantly reduced feelings of depression, anxiety, and stress in both women and men.

And, in a 2019 study published in the Permanente Journal, researchers investigated whether CBD would improve sleep and anxiety. They provided CBD treatment to 72 adults and found that anxiety scores decreased in 79% of patients within the first month of use.

Helping with sleep and improving overall state of relaxation

One of the most commonly reported side effects of people dealing with back is sleep disturbances and the same Permanente Journal study also looked at how CBD use could improve sleep – sleep scores improved in 67% of patients within the first month.

It’s believed CBD does this by tackling the root causes of your sleep issues. It goes without saying that the less anxious you are and the less pain you are in through the day- the better night’s sleep you are likely to get!

Why is using CBD oil for back pain relief a good option

Some studies also suggest that CBD can have an effect on how an individual actually perceives pain and can make you more resilient and allow you to cope better with the pain that you are in, but more robust research is needed.

CBD is generally considered a full-body treatment, which means that it does not target back pain specifically—except in the case of topical products—but contributes to an overall feeling of relaxation and pain relief.

As detailed above, CBD could help you not only deal with the physical pain, but your overall state of wellness by helping combat the mental health and sleep deprivation issues caused by your chronic back pain – something that modern pain killers cannot do.
