CBD could reduce inflammation and symptoms of arthritis
CBD has been shown in several studies, like this one from 2015 in the journal of Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry, to offer relief from pain and inflammation, which as our joints and muscle age is often a major factor that causes pain in older people.
A 2016 study published in the European Journal of Pain examined the efficiency of transdermal CBD for pain and inflammation in animals. Researchers found that CBD helped reduce swelling as well as other signs of inflammation.
The study concluded that CBD provides potential therapeutic relief when aiming to treat arthritis pain, as well as inflammation caused by hormonal, without any apparent side effects.
CBD can combat the anxiety associated with growing older
Managing chronic pain daily can take its toll. Anxiety, stress, and depression are all commonly associated with aging.
Thankfully, there have been loads of studies which identify the potential impact of CBD on mood, including its built-in anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects.
In fact, a study published in 2018 in the Journal of Affective Disorders found that cannabis significantly reduced feelings of depression, anxiety, and stress in both women and men.
And, in a 2019 study published in the Permanente Journal, researchers investigated whether CBD would improve sleep and anxiety. They provided CBD treatment to 72 adults and found that anxiety scores decreased in 79% of patients within the first month of use.
Helping with sleep and improving overall state of relaxation
One of the most commonly reported side effects of people growing older is sleep disturbances and the same Permanente Journal study also looked at how CBD use could improve sleep – sleep scores improved in 67% of patients within the first month.
It’s believed CBD does this by tackling the root causes of your sleep issues. It goes without saying that the less anxious you are and the less pain you are in through the day – the better night’s sleep you a likely to get!
Prevent bone density loss
CBD could also help with low bone density – a cause of osteoporosis and a common side effect of growing older.
The most common cause of osteoporosis pain is a spinal compression fracture. It can cause sudden, severe back pain that gets worse when you are standing or walking and trouble twisting or bending your body.
Some research has found that CBD interacts with a cannabinoid receptor that may play a role in bone density loss. CBD may therefore be able to reduce the rate of bone density loss that can also be a common cause of back pain in older people.
The Arthritis Foundation also notes some anecdotal evidence that shows some people who use CBD for arthritis saw improved pain levels.
